Top Training at Trafford
In January 2007, Trafford Council’s Disability Equality Manager, Anne Tober, commissioned Breakthrough to deliver disability equality training to over 400 middle and senior managers within the Council. Since the first sessions in February 2007, our training is proving a hit – with over 95% of participants rating the overall usefulness of the sessions as either “Good” or “Excellent”. Further sessions have recently been booked for autumn 2007, due to popular demand by Council staff.
Breakthrough’s unique training is underpinned by the Social Model of Disability and the Principles of Independent Living, and is always delivered by disabled people. Our training has an emphasis on participants implementing what they have learnt into their work – for example, the Trafford Council Disability Equality Action Training involves an action planning exercise in which participants must identify short, medium and long term goals resulting from the training. These are then followed up by the Disability Equality Team.
One participant from Trafford Council commented “I am looking forward to putting [what I have learnt] into practice and think it will make a big difference to Trafford Council’s service and staff environment”. Another participant said “This course was well presented and opened debate, highlighting issues that need addressing within my own service”.
Anne Tober adds “Over the years, it is because I have always had Breakthrough UK that has allowed me to continue with this work. It has always provided both reassuring support and understanding. Within a local authority, disability is an area which isn’t yet properly understood and by going back to an organisation of disabled people like Breakthrough UK, it gives the reassurance that what you are fighting for is very important”
